National Prescribing Service (NPS)

The National Prescribing Service (NPS) is an independent, Australian organisation for Quality Use of Medicines.

Aims
• To improve GP knowledge of medications
• In partnership with the NPS, to optimise the uptake of Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) Programs for health professionals through local implementation.

Activities
• Pharmacist visits practices to update and inform on latest medications and case studies of trials
• Educational visiting (academic detailing) and small-group case-based discussion for GPs on therapeutic topics that are linked to national activities and resources
• Communication on Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) issues for GPs
• Raising QUM issues in local media.

• Enhances GP professional development
• Encourages health professionals to implement change to enhance QUM in their daily practice

Available to health professionals for answers to questions on:
·         newly available drugs
·         drug interactions with other drugs, foods, alcohol or complementary medicines
·         adverse drug reactions
·         drug safety in pregnancy or lactation
·         use of drugs in unapproved indications and the evidence if any to support such use
